Charming Shoppes names former Jo-Ann Stores chief interim CEO

Alan Rosskamm, former chairman and CEO of fabric-and-crafts merchant Jo-Ann Stores Inc., has been named interim CEO of multi-channel women’s apparel retailer Charming Shoppes Inc. He replaces Dorrit Bern, who has resigned as president and CEO.

Rosskamm, who is also a 15-year veteran of the Charming Shoppes board of directors, will lead the company as a special committee of the board searches for a permanent chief executive, the retailer says.

Charming Shoppes notes that during the second quarter ending August 2, 2008, the company anticipates an after-tax charge in the range of $5 million to $6 million, or five to six cents per diluted share, related to the terms of Bern's employment agreement.

The retailer, which specializes in the sale of plus-size women’s wear under such brands as Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherines, also named Brian Woolf, the former chairman of women’s apparel retailer Cache Inc., as president of the Lane Bryant brand. He succeeds LuAnn Via, who has resigned and will leave after a short transition period.

Prior to Cache, Woolf served in senior merchandising positions at retailers including Limited Stores, Marshall’s, Lazarus, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s.

Charming Shoppes is No. 103 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide; Jo-Ann Stores is No. 210. In addition to retail e-commerce sites, the retailer sells through catalogs and more than 2,400 stores.
