Bidz.com reaches out to Spanish-speaking jewelry shoppers

Visitors who want to see Bidz.com Inc.’s online jewelry offerings described in Spanish now can click an “En Español” button on the home page to see a translated version. Bidz.com also has hired Spanish-speaking customer service staff to assist consumers in the new target market.

The Spanish-language site is the first in a series of non-English sites that will seek to tap—and extend—the auction site’s global appeal.

Bidz.com derives 24% of its revenue from outside the U.S., and international revenue grew 60% in the first quarter of 2008, the company says. The web-only company reported $187 million in revenue for 2007 and sells more than 12,000 items a day.

“Our exciting auction format delivers unsurpassed value to consumers, and we believe that by making the site available in other languages, beginning with Spanish, we’ll bring our service to new audiences around the world,” says David Zinberg, CEO. “We believe that these sites can be a tremendous growth opportunity for the company.”

Plans include German and Arabic language versions of Bidz.com, No. 74 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
