Internet marketing salaries little changed from last year, says Crandall

Salaries of Internet marketers are little changed in the past year, according to an annual survey by Crandall Associates Inc., which specializes in recruiting marketing executives.

For instance, the salary range for a search engine optimization manager with four to seven years of experience is $61,600 to $77,900 this year, almost the same as last year’s range of $61,400 to $77,900. The top reported salary for that position both years was $100,000.

For e-mail marketing managers with four to seven years on the job, the salary range also went up only slightly, from $66,600 to $73,100 last year to $66,700 to $73,500 this year. The highest reported salary remained steady at $96,000.

The weakness of the economy overall and the maturing of the Internet both contribute to smaller salary increases, says Wendy Weber, president of Crandall. “At one point there were fewer practitioners, and they were more or less able to name their price,” Weber says. “At this point, proficiency in the online channel is more pervasive, so salaries have leveled off.”

The Crandall survey this year added a sixth job title, director of e-commerce, to the five Internet-related jobs it reported on in the past. That reflects more companies creating jobs with this title, Weber says.

The salary range for a director of e-commerce, according to the Crandall survey, is $78,100 to $89,700 for someone with one to three years experience, $85,900 to $101,300 with four to seven years experience, and $97,400 to $142,300 for seven or more years of experience. The highest reported salary was $168,900. Crandall often excludes the top-reported salary from its ranges because it may be an exception.
