Consumers pit Wonder Woman against Tinkerbell

Who would have thought Pippi Longstocking, Tinkerbell, Raggedy Ann and Wonder Woman hung out together? And why on earth is a flapper tagging along? Research firm Hitwise has the answers.

It’s the Halloween season, and consumers are looking to online experiences to disguise offline experiences. For the four weeks ending October 20, the most popular Internet searches that included the word “costume,” according to Hitwise, were Hannah Montana, pirate, Wonder Woman, Little Red Riding Hood, Tinkerbell, Pippi Longstocking, flapper and Raggedy Ann. Also among popular descriptive searches were “cheap Halloween costume ideas,” which increased 305% over the same period last year, and “adult Halloween costume,” which increased 336% over last year.

Buycostumes.com was the most visited site in Hitwise’s category of 22 leading online costume retailers. The site received 34% of all U.S. traffic in the category. Following Buycostumes.com was Halloween Express, which received 11.5% of visits, and Spirit Halloween, receiving 11.1%.

Other costume online retailers rounding out the top 10 include Costume Super Center, AnniesCostumes.com, Costume Hub, Costume Craze, Zoogster Costumes, Halloweenmart.com and Anytimecostumes.com.
