Streamed video is working its way into the mainstream of how consumers spend time online: 132 million Americans, or nearly 75% of all U.S. Internet users, watched streamed video online during May, consuming an average of 158 minutes of video per user, reports comScore Inc.
Google sites – including Google Video and YouTube, acquired by Google Inc. in October 2006 – topped the ranking with both the largest number of videos streamed and largest streamed video viewing audience. At 1.8 billion, videos streamed on Google sites represented 21.5% of all online videos transmitted in May. Virtually all of that number – 1.7 billion – occurred on YouTube.com. Google sites drew more than 64.9 million unique streamers.
Trailing Google sites’ market share at a distance was Fox Interactive Media, at 8.1% of all videos streamed online, or 680 million. Fox Interactive’s audience consisted of 52.7 million unique streamers. Yahoo sites had the third largest market share at 4.6% or 387 million videos streamed in May, and 35 million video viewers.
In other findings, comScore determined that in May, the average online consumer viewed 63 video streams or more than two per day. More than one in three U.S. Internet users – 35% -- watched video on YouTube.com.
