Google strengthens its grip on the search market, Hitwise reports

In case anyone needs reminding, web traffic measurement company Hitwise reports today that Google continues to dominate the online search market by a wide and getting-wider margin. Hitwise reports that Google accounted for 64.13% of all online searches in March, up from 63.0% a month earlier and 58.33% a year earlier.

Second place was Yahoo, with 21.26% of the search market, down a tad from 21.47% a month earlier and 22.3% a year earlier. MSN lost significant search share in the past year, falling to 9.15% in March from 9.3% in February and 13.09% a year ago. Ask brings up the rear with a 3.48% share in March, 3.52% in February and 3.99% in March 2006.

The remaining 48 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for the balance of searches. Hitwise bases its rankings on a sample of 10 million U.S. Internet users.

"Google's growth shows no signs of slowing," said Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, who is speaking at Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 4-7 in San Jose, in a session entitled Getting Better Mileage From the Search Engines. "Despite capturing the majority of searches in the U.S., and in light of competitors’ improvements, Google’s market share of executed searches continues to grow, exceeding 10% growth year-over-year.”

25.35% of visitors arrived at shopping web sites from search engines, Hitwise reports, up 6% from a year ago. Google accounted for 15.43% of traffic to shopping sites.
