87% of consumers research products online, buy offline

87% of consumers research products online before buying them in person or in a store, according to BIGresearch’s June Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

Of those consumers who research products online, 58% made less than $50,000 per year. That income group reported electronics, apparel and medicines/vitamins as the top three products they researched online and then bought in person.

For consumers in the $50,000-plus income range, electronics, home improvement items and appliances were the products most often researched online and bought in person, the survey found.

Consumers surveyed cited Google.com as the top web site used first for product research, followed by Yahoo.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, and Wal-Mart.com. Among consumers with annual incomes of $50,000-plus, 27% used Google first to do product research, compared with 20% of consumers with incomes less than $50,000.

BIGresearch based the report on the responses of 7,500 consumers ages 18 years and older.
