GroceryWorks has named Matt Gutermuth its new president. He succeeds Mitchell Rhodes, who left the company late last year.
Gutermuth previously was vice president of operational initiatives at Safeway. Before that he was vice president and general manager of the company’s alcohol and tobacco products business unit in Safeway’s marketing organization. He joined the company in 2002 after five years with Nabisco, where he held a variety of senior marketing positions.
GroceryWorks is Safeway Inc.’s exclusive provider for online grocery shopping and home delivery. The company operates Safeway.com for deliveries in the San Francisco Bay Area; Sacramento, CA; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Phoenix, AZ; and Washington, DC. Safeway, No. 149 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, also runs VONS.com for the Southern California and Las Vegas markets.
Safeway grew online sales 20.8% in 2005 to $43.4 million compared with $35.9 million in 2004, according to Internet Retailer estimates. The company is one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, operating 1,776 stores in the United States and Canada. Tesco PLC, an online food retailer that serves international markets via Tesco.com, also owns part of GroceryWorks.
