Unwanted commercial e-mail to grow 63% between 2003 and 2008, study says

The average online consumer will receive 6,395 unwanted commercial e-mail messages in 2008, up 63% from the 3,920 received per person last year, Jupiter Research reports.

Jupiter adds, however, that unsolicited e-mail sponsored by legitimate marketers also poses a major challenge to marketers in their efforts to stand out among the crowd. It notes that sponsored e-mail will grow at a compound annual rate of 19% between 2003 and 2008, compared to an 11% growth rate for total e-mail.

"In order to cut through the clutter of commercial messages, marketers should focus on timeliness and relevance over frequency in their e-mail messages to consumers," Jupiter says.
