Gymboree lets shoppers mix and match kids’ apparel on the iPad

Its new app includes create-an-outfit features linked to a shopping cart.

Children’s apparel retailer Gymboree Corp. has released an iPad app for exploring its products and shopping. The app allows shoppers to browse by category, through a look book and by creating an outfit.

Mobile technology provider Revel Touch built the app to integrate with Gymboree’s e-commerce system so that shoppers will see up-to-date information for available products, the vendor says.

“Gymboree is well known as offering the most unique, age-appropriate outfits for kids, and our iPad app brings the best of our brand and new technology together,” says Beth Gumm, vice president, e-commerce, at Gymboree. “With Revel Touch, we were able to create an experience that is inspiring, fun and relevant for our customers while also being scalable, cost-effective and simple for us to maintain.”

The category browsing and look book feature bright images that are easy to swipe through and that a consumer can touch to begin a purchase. The app’s create-an-outfit tool allows a parent to create a profile of her child, including gender, age, size and an optional picture. Those details appear in a box on the upper left of the screen. Then, the shopper selects a category by which to browse, such as the Valentine’s collection. Items corresponding to a full head-to-toe outfit in that collection then appear in a grid next to the profile.

Consumers can swipe each box in the grid to change to another item from the collection in that category. For example, one box might show all the girls’ shirts in the collection, visible one at a time by swiping to the next image, while another shows all the shoes. Shoppers can also search for other available items to add. Once they’ve put together an outfit, they may save, share or buy it via the app.

Gymboree is No. 325 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
