After Q3 earnings, eBay emerges as an e-commerce stock winner

Still, the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index trailed the broader market.

Third quarter revenue and income gains for eBay Inc. preceded a 4.4% gain in the stock price of the online marketplace in last week’s Internet Retailer Online Retail Index.

EBay said that the value of merchandise sold on its U.S. marketplace increased 16% year over year in the third quarter.  Net income in the third quarter was $597 million, up 21.6% year over year.

While eBay helped push up the weekly Online Retail Index, which tracks the stocks of online retailers and e-commerce technology providers, the index as a whole fell decreased by 1.60% last week. That put the e-commerce index behind the stock market as a whole, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.11% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index increased by 0.32% in value last week.

Of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index, nine had increases, while the stocks of 16 companies decreased in value.

Following are the best-performing stocks last week in the Online Retail Index and the percentage gain in stock price for each:

• eGain, 5.9%

• Shutterfly, 5.0%

• eBay, 4.4%

• Overstock, 4.1%

• U.S. Auto Parts Network, 3.4%

Following are the Online Retail Index stocks that performed least well last week and the percentage decrease in stock price for the week:

• Groupon, -11.3%

• Digital River, -9.6%

• Vitacost, -9.4%

• Live Person, -7.4%

• Blue Nile, -6.1%
