Tata Appoints Tangent Snowball to Build Retail Ecommerce Store for Indian Market

Landmark, the biggest book and music retail chain in India and a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has launched its all-new transactional website.

Landmark, the biggest book and music retail chain in India and a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has launched its all-new transactional website, www.landmarkonthenet.com, with site management, design and build outsourced to Tangent Snowball, a London agency.

Landmark, which has 30 stores throughout India, appointed UK agency Tangent Snowball to redesign its site earlier this year with the intention of taking advantage of the huge growth opportunities in the Indian online market.

With its new site, Landmark will increase its share of this rapidly-expanding market and also drive further market growth, particularly via music downloads and eBooks.

Landmark and Tangent Snowball worked together to redesign the entire site with the Indian market and its specific requirements in mind. The look and feel of the site, the back-end functionality and CMS system have been completely overhauled.

Search functionality is key to the new site and has been customised for unique Indian requirements. In order to grow market share and create a “go-to” destination for Indian consumers, the site has also been optimised for both Google (the market leader in India) and other major search engines in the local market.

The new site also features various payment options tailored to the Indian market, including the ability to pay by cheque and pay on delivery. Many people in India also access the internet via mobile phones, so Tangent Snowball will also develop a mobile site for Landmark early in 2012.

Ashutosh Pandey, chief operating officer at Landmark, said: “The online retail market in India is a very long way from maturity, with enormous growth potential and great opportunities for companies that can come in early and get it right.

“Tangent Snowball’s international retail experience in markets like the UK and Australia meant it could bring huge sector expertise to the table and design a reliable, effective and great-looking site that takes all our local cultural requirements into account.

“While the market is still young, India is a country with enormous potential and we feel that Landmark, which already has the biggest high street book and music presence in the country, is now on course to achieve the same online.”

Spencer Yates, group account director, at Tangent Snowball, added: “India is a fascinating market, with a unique online retail culture. It’s incredibly exciting to be leading the development of such a major website and we’re looking forward to exploring the future ecommerce opportunities with an organisation the size of Tata. This fits well with our vision of expanding our ecommerce offering outside the UK where we believe the greatest growth opportunities lie.”

It’s action that matters, not the label

Jamie Nordstrom doesn’t use the term omnichannel, but the retail chain gets the concept.
