Consumers couldn’t buy on Victoria’s Secret’s site for 80 minutes Friday

The e-commerce site of lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret was unavailable for a total of about 80 minutes on Black Friday. During those times the site displayed the message, “We’re sorry, our site is temporarily unavailable,” according to web site performance monitoring firm Catchpoint Systems Inc.

The site was unavailable during three periods from 1:25 p.m. to 3:25 p.m Eastern time., returning briefly twice before showing the error message again. Victoria’s Secret, No. 18 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide did not respond to requests for comment.

Overall, the sites of most major retailers performed well during the heavy Black Friday shopping day, Catchpoint says. The firm monitored the top 55 sites in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide (excluding Netflix Inc., Blockbuster Inc., Inc., Scholastic Inc. and Redcats USA).

Here are the sites with the fastest load times, that is the time it took the site to completely display, along with their rankings in the Top 500 Guide:

  • J.C. Penney, 664 milliseconds
  • Gap Inc. Direct, No. 24, 986 milliseconds
  • Saks Direct, No. 38, 1,262 milliseconds

Target Corp., No. 22, had the slowest load time among the sites monitored at 5,794 milliseconds.

Catchpoint also measured rendering time, the time it took the site to begin to display content. Here are the sites with the fastest rendering times yesterday, along with their rankings in the Top 500 Guide:

  • Macy’s Inc., No. 17, 399 milliseconds
  • J.C. Penney Co. Inc., No. 20, 458 milliseconds
  • Staples Inc., No. 2, 463 milliseconds

Crate and Barrel, No. 55 in the Top 55, had the slowest rendering time at 2,594 milliseconds.

Despite being completely inaccessible for over an hour, was available 94.44% of the time yesterday, better than the record of some other major retailers’ sites, according to Catchpoint. The sites with worst availability yesterday, with the percentage they were available and the number of minutes they were down:

Toys ‘R’ Us Inc., No. 29, 98.68%, 16.63 min.

Foot Locker Inc., No. 53, 98.9%, 13.86 min.

Gap Inc. Direct, 99.1%, 11.09 min.

Macy’s Inc., 99.2%, 10.46 min.

Newegg Inc., No. 12, 99.3%, 8.32 min.

Neiman Marcus Group Inc., No. 39, 99.3%, 8.32 min.
