Halloween proved fruitful for thousands of online shoppers who received a shipment from Newegg Inc. that day.

That’s because orders scheduled for delivery Oct. 31 each contained an orange plastic egg with such prizes as a $5 off promo code, a flash drive or a winter hat with the Newegg logo, the retailer says. Also, a few shoppers received a golden egg stuffed with a $1,000 gift card to Newegg.com. “There is no rhyme or reason for who received the golden eggs,” says a company spokesman. “This is just one way we want to thank our loyal, awesome customers, and get them excited for the start of Black November.”

Newegg, No. 12 in Internet Retailer’s Top 500 Guide, kicked off its Black November holiday promotions yesterday, Nov. 1, and will offer discounts and promotions in all product categories throughout the month. Today, for example, the retailer is offering 20% off some computer accessories and 25% off thermal pastes, a liquid compound used in electronics and computers to increase thermal conductivity. Last year, Newegg also called the run-up to Thanksgiving Black November, but offered special deals only on Fridays that lasted 24 hours.

“While most retailers limit their deals to Black Friday weekend only, Newegg wants to give our customers access to sales all month long,” the spokesman says. Other large online retailers such as Amazon.com Inc., No. 1 in the Top 500, and Overstock.com Inc., No. 27, also have launched promotional efforts week before the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving kickoff of holiday shopping. And today, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it would offer previews of its Black Friday sales to consumers who sign up for the alert on the retailer's Facebook page or at Walmart.com. The retailer is No. 6 in the Top 500 Guide.

Additionally, from Nov. 23 to Dec. 24, Newegg will run its Iron Egg Guarantee program, the retailer says. Products on Newegg.com that display the Iron Egg icon will have an extended return policy of 60 days and carry a price guarantee. If shoppers purchase a product with an Iron Egg icon and later find the same product for a lower price at another online retailer, Newegg will refund the difference.
