Walgreens debuts in-store pickup for online shoppers in Chicago

Retail chain Walgreen Co. is rolling out a program in the Chicago area that enables online shoppers to pick up purchases at store locations. Currently 300 Walgreens stores are offering the program in the Chicago market; by August, 480 will be participating, the retailer says.  

The Web Pickup program allows customers to purchase at Walgreens.com/webpickup and pick up their purchases in about an hour. Customers can choose whether to receive a text or an e-mail alerting them when their order is ready for pick-up at the store’s photo-processing counter.

“Our customers value choice, control and convenience, and Web Pickup brings all of these together to cater to on-the-go shoppers,” says Sona Chawla, president of e-commerce, Walgreens, No. 73 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

“To shop online anywhere, any time and be able to pick up in as little as an hour is a great convenience, especially for busy moms, those who might have kids in the car, our mobility-challenged customers and many others,” Chawla says.  

In addition to Chicago, the program is available at 27 stores in San Jose, Calif. The retailer launched a pilot program at its first participating store in San Jose in the first quarter of 2010. The company says it is looking at other markets, but has yet to announce plans for further expansion.

Walgreens is planning to introduce curbside pickup in select Chicago stores in the coming months. Stores offering the service, which will require a $20 minimum purchase, will have designated parking spots for Web Pickup customers, according to the company.
