Winners were hard to find in the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index last week, as only three of the 25 index stocks advanced.
The Online Retail Index fell 3.70% during a rough week on Wall Street that left the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.34% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index 1.72% lower. For the year, the Dow is up 9.2%, the S&P 500 6.6% and the Online Retail Index 6.1%.
Among the few bright spots in the Online Retail Index last week was digital marketing services provider ValueClick, operator of the Commission Junction affiliate network and other web properties, which advanced 7.1% after reporting a 22% year-over-year gain in first quarter revenue. Amazon.com, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, eked out a 0.9% gain and Akamai Technologies, whose stock plummeted last week despite a 15% Q1 earnings gain, bounced back this week to gain 0.5%.
Among the biggest losers of the week were live chat technology provider LivePerson, which disappointed investors with its earnings outlook, and Blue Nile, whose sales slumped Friday, a day after the e-retailer reported 8.3% sales growth in the first quarter.
