John Barbour worked at Top 500 companies Toys 'R' Us and RealNetworks.
Leapfrog Enterprises Inc. has a new CEO. John Barbour, an e-commerce veteran, takes over leadership of the educational products e-retailer, No. 385 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, from William Chiasson, who becomes chairman of the board. The retailer also appointed Barbour to a seat on the board of directors.
Barbour comes from software and games retailer RealNetworks Inc., No. 99 in the Top 500 Guide. Between October 2008 and August 2010 he worked as president of the company’s GameHouse division.
He also worked as president of Toys 'R' Us Inc., No. 37 in the Top 500 Guide, from August 2004 to June 2006. Prior to that, he was president of the toy retailer’s international arm and chairman of Toys 'R' Us Japan, and also president and CEO of the retailer’s e-commerce site. Barbour worked at consulting firm Volta Capital between 2006 and 2008.
“John has a 25-year track record of buidling global consumer and Internet businesses in both traditional retail and direct-to-consumer environments,” says Chiasson. “He previoulsy led the successful turnaround of the Toys 'R' Us U.S. and international divisions.”
Last year, Leapfrog launched a system that lets kids play games, read e-books, watch videos and do other activities across a new Leapfrog Explorer handheld device and the Leapfrog web site.
