United Parcel Service of America Inc. said today that its shipping rates for both ground shipments and air express shipments will go up 4.9% effective Jan. 3, 2011.

The net increase for ground shipments is based on a 5.9% increase in the base rate, minus a 1% reduction in its ground fuel surcharge, UPS said.

The increase for air express shipments is based on a 6.9% hike in the base rate, less a 2% reduction in its air and international fuel surcharge.

The 4.9% net increase is similar to the percentage increases UPS has announced in recent years. The full 2011 rate schedule is available at UPS.com/rates.
