Web sales trump store sales for Aeropostale in Q2

Web sales grew 32% in Q2 while same-store sales increased 4%.

Web sales grew eight times faster than store sales for specialty apparel retailer Aeropostale Inc. in the second quarter.

For the quarter ended July 31, Aeropostale, No. 118 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide , reported:

    

  • Web sales increased 32.3% to $20.9 million from $15.8 million in the second quarter of 2009.
  • Total sales grew year over year 9.2% to $494.7 million from $453 million.
  • Comparable-store sales increased 4%.
  • Net income grew 13% to $43.6 million from $38.6 million in the second quarter of 2009.

 

Internet Retailer calculates the web accounted for 4.2% of total sales compared with 3.5% in the prior year.

Internet Retailer also calculates the Internet accounted for 12.2%—$5.1 million—of Aeropostale’s total sales growth in the second quarter of $41.7 million.

For the first two quarters, Aeropostale reported:

 

  • Web sales increased 37.5% to $44.7 million from $32.5 million in the first two quarters of 2009.
  • Total sales grew year over year 11.3% to $958.3 million from $861 million.
  • Net income grew 26.5% to $88.9 million from $70.3 million in the first half of 2009.

Internet Retailer calculates the web accounted for 4.7% of total sales compared with 3.8% in the prior year. Internet Retailer also calculates the Internet accounted for 12.5% —$12.2 million—of Aeropostale’s total sales growth in the first two quarters of $97.3 million.
