Travel media company ShermansTravel.com has launched Facebook social plug-ins to generate conversations on its site. The plug-ins allow Facebook users to join the discussion after signing in to ShermansTravel.com.

Facebook launched social plug-ins last week as a way to make Facebook even more central to social interaction on the web, ShermansTravel.com is one of more than 50,000 sites that already have implemented the plug-ins, Facebook says. Facebook has made it easy to do. To add each function to a web site, such as the “like” function, a web site developer goes to http://developers.facebook.com/plugins to copy a single line of HTML code to paste to their own site.

Facebook also designed the plug-ins so that web site operators can customize them to their needs. Working with social commerce technology vendor Social Amp Inc., ShermansTravel.com built its applications so that the site’s users can indicate "I Want to Go," "I'm Going" or "I've Been" to particular locales on ShermansTravel.com or to note that they “like” destinations, restaurants and hotels on the site.

When a Facebook participant uses the application, ShermansTravel.com shows a thumbnail of her Facebook profile picture, along with her action. That could allow, for instance, someone who is planning a trip to India to connect with someone who indicates she’s already been there.

"Applying Facebook's new applications to the travel space is a perfect fit," says Jim Sherman, founder and president of ShermansTravel Media. "Friends love to discuss where they've been or where they're going, and now we can help them connect, join the conversation, and provide the tools they need to make their dream trips a reality."
