Chaos on Wall Street takes its toll on e-commerce stocks

The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index of 25 e-commerce stocks plummeted along with the rest of the stock market late last week. But a few e-retailers survived the carnage, notably Overstock.com, whose share price gained 18.4% on the strength of a positive first quarter earnings report.

The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index of 25 e-commerce stocks plummeted along with the rest of the stock market late last week. But a few e-retailers survived the carnage, notably Overstock.com, whose share price gained 18.4% on the strength of a positive first quarter earnings report.

The Online Retail Index finished the week down 6.26%, in line with the decline in the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 5.71% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped 6.39% last week.

Only three of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index gained last week. Leading the way was web-only discounter Overstock.com, whose shares surged after the company reported a 42.3% increase in first quarter sales and net income of $3.7 million after losing $4 million in the same quarter last year.
