With 48% of the Top 500 retailers reporting annual e-commerce revenue, web-only merchants dominated growth online in 2009 and took business away from the rest of the market, according to an updated analysis of data for Internet Retailer’s forthcoming 2010 Top 500 Guide.

Revenue for the 240 merchants that have reported annual sales so far increased 12.2% to $75.5 billion from $67.3 billion in 2008. But among 123 web-only merchants, sales increased nearly twice as fast: up 23.1% to $36.2 billion from $29.4 billion in 2008.

The analysis of 123 web-only merchants, 57 chain retailers, 42 catalog companies and 18 consumer brand manufacturers also reveals:

  • Consumer brand manufacturers grew annual web sales by 9.2% to $1.55 billion from $1.42 billion in 2008.
  • Chain retailers’ web sales increased 10.8% in 2009 to $29.39 billion from $26.53 billion in the prior year.
  • Catalogers posted a 6.0% decline in online revenue to $9.32 billion from $9.91 billion in 2008.
