U.S. Auto Parts accelerates, but most e-commerce stocks shift into reverse

After reporting strong online and offline fourth quarter results, U.S. Auto Parts Network shares gained 7.8% last week, putting it at the top of the 25 stocks in the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index.

After reporting strong online and offline fourth quarter results, U.S. Auto Parts Network shares gained 7.8% last week, putting it at the top of the 25 stocks in the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index. The multichannel auto parts retailer reported improved Q4 profits on the strength of a 36% increase in web sales and 31% growth in offline sales.

But only 10 of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index advanced last week, and the index as a whole slid 0.4%. The e-commerce index slightly outperformed the broader stock market as the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.74% last week and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined 0.42%.

For all of 2010, however, e-commerce stocks have trailed the market, giving up ground the Online Retail Index gained late in 2009 when stronger-than-expected online holiday sales fueled investor enthusiasm. For the first two months of 2010, the Online Retail Index is down 4%, while the Dow and S&P; 500 are both off just under 1%.

Here are the best-performing stocks last week in the Online Retail Index and the percentage price increase for each:

  • U.S. Auto Parts Network, 7.8%
  • LivePerson, 7.6%
  • Drugstore.com, 3.4%%
  • Blue Nile, 2.7%
  • Keynote Systems, 2.3%

Here are the Online Retail Index stocks that performed least well last week and the percentage decline in stock price for the week:

  • RealNetworks, -5,2%
  • United Online, -5.2%
  • 1800Flowers.com, -3.8%
  • Systemax, -3.7%

The 25 companies in the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index are: 1-800-Flowers.com Inc., Akamai Technologies, Amazon.com Inc., American Greetings Corp., Art Technology Group Inc., Bidz.com Inc., Blue Nile Inc., CyberSource Corp., DemandTec Inc., Digital River Inc., Drugstore.com Inc., eBay Inc., GSI Commerce Inc., Keynote Systems Inc., LivePerson Inc., Netflix Inc., NutriSystem Inc., Overstock.com Inc., PetMed Express Inc., RealNetworks Inc., Shutterfly Inc., Systemax Inc., U.S. Auto Parts Network, United Online Inc.
