Web sales jumped nearly 20% at Macy’s in 2009

Department store chain Macys Inc. reported a 26.6% jump in web sales in the fourth quarter and a 19.6% rise in online sales for fiscal 2009 compared to the prior year—outperforming total sales which fell 1.1% in the fourth quarter and 5.6% for 2009.

Department store chain Macys Inc. reported a 26.6% jump in web sales in the fourth quarter and a 19.6% rise in online sales for fiscal 2009 compared to the prior year-far outperforming total sales which fell 1.1% in the fourth quarter and 5.6% for 2009.

For the fourth quarter Macy’s reported:

  • Web sales rose 26.6%. The retailer did not report dollar sales figures for its e-commerce business.
  • Total sales fell 1.1% to $7.85 billion from $7.93 billion in the year-earlier period.
  • Same-store sales fell 0.8%.
"The fourth quarter represented a clear-cut improvement in sales trends from earlier in the year, driven by success from My Macy`s, a 26.6% increase in online sales and a significant rebound at Bloomingdale`s,” says Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and CEO of Macy’s, No. 23 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

For fiscal year 2009, Macy’s reported:

  • Web sales rose 19.6%.
  • Sales fell 5.6% to $23.49 billion from $24.89 billion in 2008.
  • Same-store sales fell 5.3%.
