Proximity Blue Proves Mobile Phones are the Right Medium for Delivering Discounts and Promotions

New York, NY December 2, 2009 -- As cash-strapped consumers look for ways to save money, they are increasingly relying on coupons for discounts during tough times. Recognizing this trend, some popular retailers have partnered with Proximity Blue, a leading mobile marketing and technology company, to deliver coupons directly to their customers` mobile phones.

Seeking to drive traffic to their stores and increase brand awareness, Retailers combined old-fashioned coupon clipping with state-of-the art mobile technology to allow consumers to redeem digital coupons on their mobile phones in stores and at the point-of-sale. Developed by Proximity Blue, the mobile coupon program was conducted at shopping malls across New York City and Northern New Jersey. Large floor decals alerted shoppers to the coupon program and Proximity Blue`s Bluetooth Media Server and mobile Web technology transmitted the coupons to a consumers` mobile phone within proximity of a store. At the checkout, a cashier entered a unique key code into the register, enabling the customer to receive the discount without having to rely on presenting a physical coupon.

"More and more shoppers have been seeking out discounts amid the recession, and mobile coupons just make it easier for consumers to use because they don`t have to remember to clip, print, or have them on hand every time they leave the house," said Boris Tishaev, vice president of Proximity Blue. "The one thing we all make sure to have with us when we leave the house is our cell phone. It`s a lifeline to friends, family, and information, and a great tool for marketers to stay in touch with their customers in real-time."

The technology and engaging mobile marketing techniques leveraged in this campaign provided retailers with a high-level of brand exposure in busy shopping centers packed with hundreds of retail stores vying for the coveted consumer dollar. The floor decals alerted shoppers to the mobile coupon program and helped retailers stand out amongst the competition; evidenced by the thousands of coupons that were downloaded throughout the course of the campaign.

"For retailers, the mobile coupon provides an added incentive for shoppers to visit their store," exclaimed Tishaev. "This is an opportunity for brands to be directly part of the consumer experience at the height of engagement when they are in stores and thinking about their next purchase. Mobile coupons delivered based on proximity can help drive consumers to storefronts and will give marketers a crucial advantage to getting a head start on the holiday shopping season."

Brands are seeing success from mobile-based coupons because the availability and convenience of wireless discounts is attracting a newer, and younger audience, many of whom consume content and communicate on mobile devices. The Entertainment industry has also benefited from this technology by sending multimedia content, such as videos and music, to mobile phones promoting their products and events.
