Overstock.com Inc. will launch a bulk buying site-O.biz-for businesses and consumers to buy bulk merchandise on Oct. 31.

“The .biz extension is appealing to growing, innovative businesses,” says Overstock.com chairman and CEO Patrick Byrne, who was the keynote speaker at the Internet Retailer Conference last June. “Our goal is to have O.biz help small to medium-size businesses save money by leveraging the purchasing power of Overstock.com.”

Overstock, No. 29 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, says the new site will have a similar look and feel to Overstock.com and will be supported by the Overstock.com customer service operation.

Single-character domain names are a recent phenomenon and so far are rare. Overstock and Neustar, a seller of domain names that worked with Overstock to obtain the O.biz registry, say there are only five such .biz domain names worldwide.

There are 36 possible single-character domains--each of the 26 letters of the alphabet and the numerals 0 to 9--and Neustar has announced plans with online domain name auctioneer Sedo to put the remaining 31 one-character .biz domain names up for sale in a week-long auction to begin Sept. 23.
