Traffic falls at many leading computer and electronics e-retailers in May

Online retailers that sell computers and consumer electronics had a rough time attracting shoppers to their web sites in May. Nine of the top 10 e-retailers in the category reported year-over-year traffic declines for the month, Nielsen Online says.

Traffic to eBay computers fell the most with a 59% decline to 1.97 million visitors. Newegg.com was the sole retailer reporting traffic growth. It reached 4.44 million visitors, a 30% increase from a year earlier.

The top multi-category computers and electronics online shopping destinations in May with unique visitors in millions this year and last and growth from prior year, according to Nielsen Online, were:

  • Best Buy, 13.10, 14.04, -7%
  • eBay Electronics, 4.89, 9.24, -47%
  • OSTG, 4.50, 4.78, -6%
  • Newegg.com, 4.44, 3.41, 30%
  • TigerDirect.com, 3.58, 3.81, -6%
  • Gamestop.com, 2.78, 2.89, -4%
  • Windows Marketplace, 2.19, 3.38, -35%
  • eBay Computers, 1.97, 4.75, -59%
  • Canon, 1.83, 2.36, -23%
  • Sony, 1.76, 2.07, -15%

Unique visitors count only once each shopper who came to a site, no matter how many times the shopper visited. This is a custom list compiled by Internet Retailer of the top online shopping destinations based on Nielsen Online data. Rankings may contain multiple web sites from the same retailer or manufacturer.
