With an 84% boost in web sales outside of the U.S. and Canada, multichannel retailer American Apparel posted a 55% increase in total online sales last year to $39.37 million from $25.40 million in 2007, as total retail sales grew 41% to $545.1 million from $387 million and comp store sales increased 22%.
American Apparel’s 2008 total online sales remained virtually unchanged as a percentage of total retail sales, at 11.5%, compared with 12% in 2007, even as the retailer expanded its number of stores last year by 48% to 260 from 182.
In its foreign markets outside of the U.S. and Canada, American Apparel realized its sharpest growth in online sales last year, as sales climbed 84.3% to $12.19 million from $6.62 million. U.S. online sales grew 43.3% to $25.48 million from $17.78 million, and online sales in Canada grew 69.5% to $1.7 million from $1 million.
For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2008, American Apparel posted total online sales of $11.38 million, up 17.6% from $9.68 million in the year-earlier period, as total retail sales grew 52.7% to $97.99 million from $64.18 million and comp store sales grew 11%.
Total Q4 online sales were 8.8% of total retail sales, down from 11.6% a year earlier. American Apparel is No. 262 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
U.S. online sales in Q4 rose 13.2% year over year to $7.62 million from $6.73 million, as online sales in Canada increased 4.1% to $433,000 and sales outside of the U.S. and Canada climbed 31.5% to $3.32 million from $2.53 million.
American Apparel also operates a wholesale operation. Total 2008 sales including all wholesale and retail sales grew 40.8% to $545.05 million from $387.04 million in 2007. Total online sales were 7.2% of total wholesale and retail sales last year, up from 6.6% in 2007.
In Q4 2008, total wholesale and retail sales grew 31% to $145.64 million from $111.19 million in Q4 2007. Total online sales were 7.8% of total wholesale and retail sales, down from 8.7% in Q4 2007.
