Germany’s Second Largest Sporting Goods Retailer Expands its Global Reach with eCommerce Sites in the Netherlands and Russia

Woburn, Mass. – March 10, 2009 – Demandware, the leading on-demand ecommerce solutions provider, today announced that SportScheck GmbH, a major German sporting goods retailer, has selected Demandware as the ecommerce solution to support the expansion of its European online business. SportScheck recently launched two new sites on the Demandware eCommerce Platform – in the Netherlands: www.sportscheck.nl and Russia: www.sportscheck-online.com – with sites in additional European countries to follow.

SportScheck is the second largest sporting goods retailer in Germany, with more than € 300 million in revenue. The retailer operates an extensive mail-order business and 14 stores in Germany, and carries more than 20,000 articles and 400 brands. SportScheck has identified the online channel as the primary means by which to grow its international business across geographies.

“We’re confident that in Demandware, we have found an ecommerce partner that can support our ambitious international expansion plans. The online channel is becoming increasingly important as it will allow us to reach a larger target group than just selling through our traditional mail-order business,” said Jari Kral, head of ecommerce and new media at SportScheck. “We selected Demandware because of its extensive functionality and its flexible on-demand business model. Demandware provides the capabilities we need to expand our online sales internationally.”

The SportScheck sites were implemented by T-Systems Multimedia Solutions GmbH, a Demandware partner in Germany. The integrated logistics platform used is that of BAUR Fulfillment Solutions GmbH.

Demandware provides SportScheck with the following key capabilities to support its international multi-site ecommerce initiative:

  • Ability to develop multiple sites quickly from a common architecture
  • Extensive expertise launching ecommerce sites internationally
  • Full in-house control over merchandising promotions, catalog, pricing and all other aspects of the online shopping experience to easily customize sites per region or product line
  • Seamless, automatic upgrades to continually leverage new merchandising functionality for site innovation
  • Support for multiple languages, currencies and payment types
  • Integration with various payment and backend systems
  • On-demand model that eliminates the need to invest and maintain costly geographically dispersed IT infrastructure

“We are delighted to have been selected by SportScheck as their ecommerce partner and look forward to helping them achieve their international growth objectives,” said Stephan Schambach, founder and executive chairman, Demandware. “Global ecommerce is a sweet spot for Demandware, given our vast experience launching dozens of sites with European retailers. The capabilities of our ecommerce platform combined with our expertise and that of our European partners make us the ideal solution for retailers who want to sell across borders.”
