Customer advice helps Dell sell more laptops

With its new IdeaStorm.com customer forum, Dell has elicited more than 11,000 ideas for improving products that have helped to improve sales of products like its new Latitude line of laptops, the company says.

With its new IdeaStorm.com customer forum, Dell Inc. has elicited more than 11,000 ideas for improving products that have helped to improve sales of products like its new Latitude line of laptops, the company says.

Dell included six consumer-generated ideas in the new Latitudes last summer, including back-lit keyboards, says Bob Pearson, vice president of communities and conversations. In addition to six customer ideas incorporated into the Latitudes, Dell uses hundreds of other ideas in other products. “We’ve implemented more than 260 consumer ideas overall,” he says.

Not only has that helped sales of the Latitude, but the social ties Dell has developed with IdeaStorm participants complements the company’s ambitious presence on social networks Facebook.com and Twitter.com, where users may share information from IdeaStorm, Pearson adds.

Dell is No. 4 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
