As the economic news gets more dismal, shoppers are spending less, research firms report. In this cloudy climate, many retailers are turning to promotions and special offers to entice shoppers to buy. Some retailers are giving mobile coupons a try.
Looking to distinguish itself among the small number of mobile coupon services, Mobile Dialog Inc. has expanded its offerings beyond text message coupons to include online and print. The coupon company has re-launched its web site to include portals for coupons redeemable at e-commerce sites and in bricks-and-mortar stores.
Mobile coupons can be a powerful marketing tool this holiday season as retailers look to reach out to customers and pull them onto e-commerce sites and into stores, says Ola Ayeni, president and CEO of Mobile Dialog, which operates coupon site Text2Store.com.
“Retailers are excited about giving deals this year compared with last year because they already are seeing that consumers are not shopping like they did last year,” Ayeni says. “Offering online and print coupons adds to the power of mobile coupons, which appeal especially to consumers 18 to 35 years old. They’re not in front of the computer all the time, and many don’t read newspapers. But they always have their mobile phones with them.”
Consumers register at Text2Store.com and create an account, indicating if they would like to receive coupons by text message, e-mail or both. Consumers do not have to register to access the online and print coupons portals. Mobile and online coupons can be redeemed using promotional codes; consumers can print coupons from the web site and present them in stores. In addition to the promotional code, mobile coupons include the address and phone number of the nearest store, and a hyperlink to the retailer’s web site.
Mobile Dialog has relationships with more than 40 retailers, restaurant chains, and travel and leisure businesses. It offers coupons from Internet Retailer Top 500 merchants including CVS Corp. (No. 85), FragranceNet.com (No. 156), Gaiam Inc. (No. 278), Ice.com Inc. (No. 144), Sierra Trading Post Inc. (No. 99), SkyMall Inc. (No. 153) and Walgreen Co. (No. 70).
