A threatened strike that could have delayed UPS pick-ups and deliveries in the Chicago area has been averted.
UPS reached agreement yesterday on new five-year contracts with two Teamsters locals, just hours before their contracts were to expire at midnight. One of the unions, Local 705, had authorized a strike in a vote Sunday. The other union, Local 710, had not taken a strike vote.
The contracts cover 11,000 drivers, package handlers and other UPS employees in the Chicago area. These two Teamsters locals negotiated with UPS separately from the national contract that UPS negotiated with other unions last year.
The new contract provides improved wages and benefits for workers, a UPS spokesman says.
