More bang for the buck at online gun and ammo auction site

Online shooting sports products retailer CheaperThanDirt.com has launched an auction and classified ad section on its e-commerce site to enable buying and selling of firearms and ammunition.

Online shooting sports products retailer CheaperThanDirt.com has launched an auction and classified ad section on its e-commerce site to enable buying and selling of firearms and ammunition. The company says its FreeAds service is an alternative to sites such as eBay Inc., which won’t handle transactions for guns and ammo.

CheaperThanDirt.com’s free marketplace enables shoppers to legally purchase and sell firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories online. The service is filling a void in the market because online auctions and classified companies such as eBay and Craigslist.com do not accept these types of postings, the company says. The auction and classified ads are free to buyers and sellers and there are no listing fees, no commissions and no hidden costs. The site also does not carry pop-up ads or other paid advertising.

CheaperThanDirt.com stipulates that all weapons purchased through the FreeAds service must be shipped to a federally licensed firearms dealer. The company notes that state laws addressing the sale of weapons and ammunition vary and that buyer and seller are responsible for adhering to their states` regulations.

Resources in the FreeAds section will include a roster of national gun shows, and lists of all gun stores, gun ranges and clubs, and shooting events in the U.S. CheaperThanDirt.com, No. 300 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, also plans to include a listing of every ammunition caliber and the make, model and descriptive terms of firearms made in the past century, along with firearm-related articles.

“Most ‘gun people’ have things they want to sell; a holster from a handgun trade long ago, ammo in a caliber they don’t shoot anymore and even a firearm. We wanted to offer a one-stop shop where they could buy, sell and trade and not feel like a criminal, and not pay any commissions or listing fees,” says Michael Tenny, founder of Cheaper Than Dirt.
