In its second-largest acquisition, Amazon buys the company for $970 million.
Internet and mail-order fulfillment company Southern Fulfillment Services has acquired gourmet citrus and food catalog and Internet retailer Pittman & Davis.
Internet and mail-order fulfillment company Southern Fulfillment Services LLC has acquired gourmet citrus and food catalog and Internet retailer Pittman & Davis. Financial details were not disclosed.
Southern Fulfillment already owns and operates a similar company, Texas-based gourmet food and citrus retailer, Hale Groves. Bob Daberkow, vice president, business intelligence, for Southern Fulfillment, says the acquisition of Pittman & Davis, which is located in Florida, will offer protection against adverse weather conditions.
“We now have operations in Texas and Florida which will help us in the case of an event like the hurricanes of 2004,” Daberkow says.
The acquisition also will give each company access to a broader range of customers. Pittman & Davis has a more price-conscious customer base, while Hale Groves’ consumers are less concerned about price, Daberkow says.
Combined, about 20% -25% of the two companies’ sales are through the Internet. Daberkow says the average customer for both companies is around 60 years old.
Southern Fulfillment will keep all Pittman & Davis facilities and employees. With the acquisition, Southern Fulfillment will own and manage more than 324,000 square feet of production facilities.
