Circuit City backs up CEO’s words with 52% rise in traffic, Nielsen says

CEO Philip Schoonover said in January that Circuit City was seeing a “massive shift” to the web. And the consumer electronics retailer backed that up in February with a 52% year-over-year increase in web traffic.

Online consumers searching for that perfect PC or MP3 player visited Circuit City the most in February, inching ahead of January’s winner, Best Buy. More than 14 million computer and consumer electronics shoppers trekked to the Circuit City during the month-a 52% increase from a year earlier.

CEO Philip Schoonover said in January that Circuit City was seeing a “massive shift” to the web. And the consumer electronics retailer backed that up in February with a 52% year-over-year increase in web traffic that put it at the top of the computer and consumer electronics category, according to Nielsen Online.

The top 10 online computer and consumer electronics shopping destinations in February with unique visitors in millions this year and last and growth from prior year, according to Nielsen Online were:

  • Circuit City, 14.3, 9.38, 52%
  • Best Buy, 13.45, 12.66, 6%
  • eBay Electronics, 8.32, 10.42, -20%
  • eBay Computers, 5.4, 5.7, -7%
  • Tiger Direct, 4.05, 3.24, 25%
  • Newegg 3.95, 2.76, 43%
  • Windows Marketplace, 3.22, 3.57, -9%
  • Sony, 2.75, 2.22, 24%
  • Gamestop.com, 2.49, 1.51, 65%
  • Sony Electronics, 1.92, 2.25, -15%

Unique visitors count only once each shopper who came to a site, no matter how many times the shopper visited. This is a custom list compiled by Internet Retailer of the top e-commerce sites in this category based on Nielsen Online data. By length of visit, the top 10 computer and consumer electronics sites in February (hours:minutes:seconds), according to Nielsen Online, were:

  • Optimum Store Online, 29:48
  • Jewelrytelevision.com, 31:26
  • eBay Electronics, 15:53
  • Newegg.com., 15:18
  • Tiger Direct.com, 11:11
  • Crutchfield.com, 10:48

  • Best Buy, 10:21

The top six retail goods and services advertisers in terms of online ad impressions (in millions) and percentage of ad impressions in February, according to Nielsen data, were:

  • eBay Inc., 1,738.91
  • 1-800-Flowers.com Inc., 956.88
  • Target Corp., 892.35
  • Blockbuster Inc., 453.66
  • ICE.com, 391.992
