GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 11 -- RedEnvelope, Inc., an online retailer of specialty gifts, asked Blesco, Inc. to work with them in determining if a new building was required to handle increasing holiday order volumes, or if a new infrastructure would provide them with the relief they needed.
Phase 1 replaced the existing Warehouse Control Software with Blesco`s Laris Warehouse Control Software. The software interfaces with RedEnvelope`s Warehouse Management System, giving direction to the PLC and allowing RedEnvelope to write custom software for tracking and finding orders in the building.
Blesco also retrofitted the existing system to handle cartons and totes, as it was originally designed to handle just totes, reducing packing labor. With orders right in the cartons, they could be sent straight to shipping to be tapped and palletized.
Blesco then integrated 4 high speed pick modules, each module with a 4- directional ERS divert delivering orders to 4 different picking zones. These pick modules were fed by a high speed NBS Wave sorter that receive orders from the existing pick modules, orders coming out of the new pick modules and also delivered replenishment cases to the back of the new pick modules. The new picking system allowed a high volume of orders to be delivered to and taken away from the pickers while using fewer operators to replenish it.
Blesco also integrated high speed sortation and take away in RedEnvelope`s personalization area, where they performed the embroidering, debossing and engraving functions to personalize the gifts. Two ERS high speed diverts were added in this area, each one feeding two of the four personalization areas. The diverts were provided with high speed delivery and take away conveyor for moving orders in and out of these areas quickly.
