No. 2 CircuitCity.com closes the gap on leader BestBuy.com

Circuit City Stores Inc., whose CircuitCity.com is the major area of company growth, narrowed the gap in unique visitors with leader Best Buy Co. Inc.’s BestBuy.com in the Consumer Electronics web sites category in January, Nielsen Online reports.

Circuit City Stores Inc., whose CircuitCity.com is the major area of company growth, narrowed the gap in unique visitors with leader Best Buy Co. Inc.’s BestBuy.com in the Consumer Electronics web sites category in January, Nielsen Online reports. In January 2007, unique visitors to CircuitCity.com trailed those to BestBuy.com by a third. But 40% growth at CircuitCity.com in the past year and 8% growth at BestBuy.com narrowed the gap to only 12% in January of this year, reports Nielsen Online.

The top 10 consumer electronics web sites in January, with unique visitors in millions this year and last and growth from prior year, according to Nielsen Online, were:

  • Best Buy, 16.20, 15.04, 8%
  • Circuit City, 14.61, 10.41, 40%
  • eBay Electronics, 9.82, 10.70, -8%
  • eBay Computers, 6.02, 6.72, -10%
  • TigerDirect.com, 3.81, 4.09, -7%
  • Windows Marketplace, 3.27, 2.26, 45%
  • Newegg.com, 3.21, 2.84, 13%
  • GameStop.com, 3,09, 2.00, 54%
  • Sony, 2.37, 2,77, -14%
  • Sony Electronics, 2.26, 2,50, -10%
Unique visitors to the category as a whole reached 54.2 million in January.

Unique visitors count only once each shopper who came to a site, no matter how many times that shopper visited. This is a custom list compiled by Internet Retailer of the top e-commerce sites in this category based on Nielsen Online data.

By time spent per visitor (hours:minutes:seconds), the top 10 consumer electronics sites, with unique visitors in millions, were:

  • Optimum Store Online, 1:17:47, 1.39
  • CDW, 0:43:35, 1.64
  • Frys.com, 0:19:37, 1.46
  • Newegg.com, 0:18:05, 3.21
  • eBay Electronics, 0:15:20, 9.82

The average shopper spent 25 minutes 2 seconds at a consumer electronics site in January. CircuitCity.com, No. 2 in traffic, was No. 11 by time spent, with the average shopper spending 9 minutes, 49 seconds at the site in January.

The top 10 retail goods & services advertisers in terms of online ad impressions (in millions) in January, according to Nielsen Online’s AdRelevance report, were:
