Online bookstore operator eCampus.com recently added 45 new schools and digital learning centers to its roster of clients, including National-Louis University in Chicago and Anoka Technical College in Anoka, MN.

With those two schools, eCampus.com, No. 185 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, now operates online bookstores for 125 four-year colleges, community colleges and high schools, up from about 80 in 2006, says CEO Matt Montgomery. “Our sweet spot is an institution where the enrollment is 5,000 students or less,” he says. “In many instances it’s more affordable for an institution of that size to operate their book store online than to maintain a physical store.”

As an online retailer eCampus.com has developed a book-selling platform for students that bypasses the store; an affiliate program aimed at students; and a virtual bookstore that enables schools to establish a branded virtual bookstore for a cut of the action while the retailer handles all the logistics.

In 2008, eCampus.com will also concentrate on adding new features and functions to its online marketplace, which allows students and others to list their used books and sell for the highest bid. For example, the company is making plans to expedite payment to booksellers within 30 days of completion of the transaction. “We want to be the quickest payer in the market,” Montgomery says.
