TripAdvisor recruits executive from online discounter Smart Bargains

Ken Surdan has joined TripAdvisor as senior vice president of technology and will lead the company’s engineering and I.T. teams. He had been chief operating officer and chief technology officer at online discount site Smart Bargains.

Ken Surdan has been named senior vice president of technology at TripAdvisor LLC, which operates several travel-related web sites. Surdan, who had been chief operating officer and chief technology officer at online discount site Smart Bargains, will lead the company’s engineering and I.T. teams.

“We’re thrilled that Ken has embraced the challenge to help us deliver the best possible tools and user experience to our travelers,” says Steve Kaufer, founder and CEO. “Ken has a history with startups where he’s proven that he can deliver robust technology platforms on time and under budget, while growing traffic and performance exponentially.”

TripAdvisor sites include bookingbuddy.com, cruisecritic.com, independenttraveler.com, seatguru.com, smartertravel.com, travel-library.com and travelpod.com. Content on the site has doubled to 10 million reviews and opinions in the past year, the company says.

“TripAdvisor is at the forefront of the user-generated content revolution and is setting the standard for excellent in this space and I look forward to being a part of the team, writing the next chapter of this success story,” Surdan says.
