GXS’ B2B Outsourcing Solution Reduces Manual Supply Chain Processes for Canadian Electronics Retailer

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. and GAITHERSBURG, Md. - May 21, 2007 - GXS, a leading provider of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce solutions, today announced that InterTAN, a leading Canadian electronics retailer and subsidiary of Circuit City, has selected GXS Managed Services to support its B2B e-commerce programs. With more than 250 suppliers, InterTAN sought a cost-effective method to conduct B2B e-commerce without the need to hire additional staff or purchase expensive software. GXS Managed Services, GXS’ leading B2B outsourcing solution, gives InterTAN the depth and breadth of a company with vast expertise in B2B. The solution supports nearly any B2B standard or protocol including electronic data interchange (EDI), Internet EDI (AS2), extensible markup language (XML), enterprise resource planning (ERP) file formats such as those from Oracle and SAP, as well as proprietary file formats. The solution will reduce manual business processes, improve transaction accuracy and increase efficiency for both InterTAN and its suppliers.

InterTAN operates more than 950 retail electronics stores throughout Canada. Its retail store brands include The Source By Circuit City, Battery Plus, THS Studio, Lifestyle Source and Source Dealer. To enhance relationships with its North American-based suppliers, InterTAN chose GXS Managed Services to support a variety of in-bound and out-bound B2B e-commerce transaction types including invoices, purchase orders, purchase order acknowledgments and advanced ship notices. By automating its supplier interactions, InterTAN is increasing supply chain visibility and decreasing time-consuming and costly manual telephone, fax and e-mail-based B2B processes. GXS Managed Services will help InterTAN shorten the order process and increase the accuracy and integrity of its orders.

“Electronics retailing is a competitive industry and anything we can do to increase our efficiency and streamline our supply chain boosts our competitive edge,” said Margo Weeks, CIO at InterTAN. “Bringing in in-house expertise to support our expanding B2B e-commerce network is cost-prohibitive and could potentially minimize focus on other integral IT projects. Outsourcing our B2B e-commerce network management to GXS makes sense and will provide us capabilities we never had before, helping us stay ahead of the curve in supply chain automation.”

In a recent survey of the GXS Managed Services customer base, respondents identified the top reasons for outsourcing the management of their B2B networks -enhancing customer service levels, greater B2B functionality and trading partner enablement - and the benefits achieved as a result. The findings reflect a shift in motivations for B2B outsourcing, from a tactical, cost-cutting activity to a strategic initiative focused on creating value. In fact, survey respondents averaged a 42 percent return on investment (ROI) in operational cost savings.

“InterTAN is part of a growing trend of mid-size retailers with complex supply chains that have turned to GXS to manage the daily operations of their B2B e-commerce programs,” said Steve Keifer, vice president of industry solutions marketing at GXS. “By outsourcing to the expert in the field, GXS, InterTAN gains a level of e-commerce capabilities equivalent to that of the world’s largest retailers with a significantly lower upfront investment and on-going operational expense. In addition to IT savings, InterTAN also is gaining cost advantages by migrating from paper-based supply chain activities to automated replenishment, warehousing and settlement processes. With best-in-class e-commerce capabilities, we believe that InterTAN will gain an advantage in the highly competitive consumer electronics market.”
