Jonathan Shapiro, former president of housewares and gifts retailer Lillian Vernon Corp., has been appointed CEO of MediaWhiz Holdings Inc., a provider of online marketing services.

Shapiro will oversee the integration of MediaWhiz’s suite of marketing services, which includes affiliate marketing, lead generation, e-mail marketing, display advertising and search engine marketing. He also will lead the development and launch of new services, the company says.

“As MediaWhiz continues its efforts to grow internally and acquire new companies, we are confident Jonathan possesses the ideal combination of leadership and online marketing experience to achieve these objectives,” says Kevin Rowe, director of Lake Capital, a private equity firm that holds a major stake in MediaWhiz.

Shapiro most recently served as president of web and catalog merchant Lillian Vernon, No. 66 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, where he was responsible for management of the entire company. Prior to that he worked with ZelnickMedia and Ripplewood Holdings on their acquisition of Lillian Vernon.

Shapiro also has served as chief strategy officer at DoubleClick, a vendor of online advertising services, where he was responsible for setting and overseeing mergers and acquisition. As senior vice president of DoubleClick’s Abacus online division, he developed DoubleClick’s data strategy and oversaw development of new online targeting products and services. He had also served as vice president of DoubleClick’s Internet advertising network.

Earlier in his career, Shapiro ran United Media’s Internet-based information and entertainment business featuring the "Dilbert Zone."

Following an investment from Lake Capital, MediaWhiz merged in 2006 with Global Resource Systems (now WhiteDelivery) to form a company providing integrated online performance marketing services. More recently, MediaWhiz acquired Text Link Ads, which specializes in text link advertisements; and Monetizeit, a vendor of lead generation services for the financial, consumer and health care markets.

Kristen Montella, vice president of online at Lillian Vernon, is speaking at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 4-7 in San Jose, in a session entitled Avoiding Disaster: Managing a Technology Implementation.
