Barnes & Noble’s 2006 web sales slip 1% from prior year

Full year web-based sales at Barnes & Noble Inc. fell 1.1% from the prior year to $433 million, the company reported today. Web sales in the fourth quarter were $164 million, up 5.1% from the year earlier Q4. Barnes & Noble’s FY2006 ended Feb. 3.

The decrease excludes the impact of the extra selling week in the fiscal year compared to the year before. Web sales in the fourth quarter were $164 million, up 5.1% from the year earlier Q4. Barnes & Noble’s FY2006 ended Feb. 3.

Companywide sales were $5.3 billion for the full year vs. $5.1 billion the year prior, and $1.9 billion for the quarter vs. $1.8 billion for the year-earlier quarter. The web accounted for 8.16% of sales in the most recent year.

Barnes & Noble store sales were $1.5 billion for the quarter and $4.5 billion for the full year. Excluding the impact of the extra week in the fiscal year, Barnes & Noble store sales increased 2% for the quarter and the full year compared to the same periods in fiscal 2005. Comparable store sales decreased 0.1% for the quarter and 0.3% for the year.

Barnes & Noble, No. 30 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, also reported that it will close its Internet distribution center in Memphis this year and fulfill all Internet orders from the company’s new distribution center in Monroe, NJ, and from its Reno, NV, facility.
