FreshDirect is working with a Brooklyn housing sales and development advisory company to install large refrigerators in the common areas of apartment and condominium buildings where FreshDirect makes frequent deliveries.

By adding refrigeration units, FreshDirect will improve customer service by dropping off orders to a common destination where the groceries and prepared food will stay stored and refrigerated until the customer picks it up, the company says. “Now our customers don`t have to wait for the food-the food will wait for them,” says FreshDirect president Steve Michaelson.

FreshDirect, No. 62 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, is working with building managers to provide size, model, manufacturer recommendations and access to volume discounts with pre-screened refrigeration manufacturers. Participating buildings also will receive a reserved early delivery time slot, which will eliminate the need for residents to wait at home for deliveries, Michaelson adds.

The first group of buildings, which includes locations in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island City, is working with FreshDirect and The Developers Group-a real estate firm that advises New York developers-on installation times and details. “By working with developers, we hope to make using FreshDirect even easier and keep our food fresher for our customers,” Michaelson says.
