About.com, a content site with more than 20 million monthly visitors for information ranging from retail goods to travel and education, is expanding online shopping opportunities through deals with PriceGrabber.com and other yet-to-be-named partners.
About.com, a content site with more than 20 million monthly visitors for information ranging from retail goods to travel and education, is expanding online shopping opportunities through deals with PriceGrabber.com and other yet-to-be-named partners. E-commerce features that link visitors to buy pages for travel and entertainment tickets are planned to debut in the first quarter of next year, About.com CEO Peter Horan tells InternetRetailer.com.
About.com also lets visitors purchase cars through a partnership with Edmunds.com, giving About.com four general categories in which visitors can make online purchases, Horan says.
The deal with PriceGrabber.com, which About.com announced this week after a 2-month implementation period, replaces a former arrangement About.com had with MySimon.com. Horan declines to say why About.com terminated the relationship with MySimon, but adds: “As we looked at which shopping site offered our readers the best experience, PriceGrabber was the best partner.”
Although the deal with PriceGrabber makes it possible for About.com visitors to purchase a general range of merchandise, About.com is mostly focusing on links to consumer electronics, cameras and cell phones-categories prominently covered in About.com’s content pages, Horan says.
The introduction of PriceGrabber expands on an April redesign of About.com that provided more interactive pages, including customized content and ads related to a user’s past visits. “PriceGrabber is a logical next step that helps our users move from potential buyers to educated consumers who feel they’ve chosen the right product at the best available price,” Horan says.
About.com users can now link through a Compare Prices tag in many of About.com’s 23 content channels, including Shopping & Style, Home & Garden and Health & Fitness. Each channel serves as a portal to individual content sites that lets visitors drill down to product details and, in many cases, links to PriceGrabber or Edmunds. Within its channels, About.com offers more than 1 million pages of original content in more than 475 topic sites.
