A key marketing executive switches from fresh food to flowers

John Boris, previously head of marketing and business development at FreshDirect Inc., is the new vice president of brand communications and retail marketing at 1-800-Flowers.com.

A well-known web retailing marketing executive is going from fresh food to fresh flowers. John Boris is the new vice president of brand communications and retail marketing at 1-800-Flowers.com.

Boris was the vice president of marketing and business development at FreshDirect Inc., a web grocer and food services company headquartered in Long Island City, NY.

Among his other duties Boris will help 1-800-Flowers continue its business development push into new merchandising categories. Non-floral merchandise such as gifts now makes up about 50% of total sales.

Online sales continued to grow at 1-800-Flowers.com last quarter despite the lack of any major gift-giving holidays during the period. Online revenues grew 8.5% to $53.1 million during the fiscal first quarter of 2005, which ended Sept. 26, compared to the same quarter a year earlier.
