Online grocer Peapod expands to Baltimore

Skokie, IL-based Peapod LLC is expanding into the Baltimore area, the company announced today, growing its potential market by 246,000 households.Shoppers will access the Peapod service through GiantFood.com.

Skokie, IL-based Peapod LLC is expanding into the Baltimore area, the company announced today, growing its potential market by 246,000 households. Peapod already serves neighboring areas of Washington, D.C., Fairfax County, VA, and Montgomery County, MD. Shoppers will access the Peapod service through GiantFood.com.

Shoppers at GiantFood.com can generate a list of items they’ve bought at Giant Food stores by entering the number of the credit card they used at Giant Food stores. They can then use that list as the starting point for their online shopping trip. Peapod, No. 51 in Internet Retailer’sTop 300 Guide to online retailers, will fulfill orders form a 75,000-square-foot warehouse in Gaithersburg, MD.

Peapod was founded in 1989 and today serves 14 U.S. markets including the metro areas of Chicago, Boston and Long Island as well as Washington, D.C., and other communities in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia and Rhode Island. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Royal Ahold in The Netherlands, as is Giant Food.
