Apple leads in traffic to computer hardware sites for week ended March 14

Apple Computer Inc. led all computer hardware manufacturers in the number of unique web site visitors for the week ended March 14, with 5 million visitors, 68% more than second-ranked Hewlett-Packard Co. with 3 million, Nielsen/NetRatings reports.

Apple Computer Inc. led all computer hardware manufacturers in the number of unique web site visitors for the week ended March 14, with 5 million visitors, 68% more than second-ranked Hewlett-Packard Co. with 3 million, Nielsen/NetRatings reports.

Dell Inc. came in third, with 2.3 million visitors, followed by Gateway Inc., 515,000; Sun Microsystems Inc, 346,000; PalmOne Inc, 319,000; and IBM Corp., 305,000.

When ranked by the average amount of time spent on their sites per visitor, HP led with 16 minutes, 50 seconds, followed by Dell, 10 minutes, 43 seconds; IBM, 10 minutes, 42 seconds; Apple, 8 minutes, 21 seconds; Gateway, 7 minutes 42 seconds; palmOne, 3 minutes, 4 seconds; and Sun, 2 minutes, 13 seconds.

By age of visitors, the largest segment to visit computer hardware sites were those aged 45+, at 43%. Other age groups accounting for more than 10% each were those aged 35-49, 32%; 55+, 23%; and 25-34, 16%. Males accounted for 55.1% of visitors overall.

Nielsen also reported that, for the week ended March 21, traffic to greeting card web sites jumped to more than 6.6 million unique visitors, up 30% from the prior week thanks to activity driven by St. Patrick’s Day. The top five sites in terms of week-to-week growth, with their percentage increase and number of visitors: Blue Mountain, up 89% to 625,000; Egreetings.com, 77%, 672,000; Hallmark.com, 63%, 868,000; AmericanGreetings.com, 38%, 1.5 million; Yahoo Greetings, 35%, 1 million

In the number of online advertising impressions for the week ended March 14, the product category of books, movies and music accounted for the largest number of impressions, at 872,528, according to Nielsen’s AdRelevance report.
