ValueVision Media, parent of ShopNBC TV and ShopNBC.com, has named William Lansing president and CEO. He will also join ValueVision’s Board of Directors.
On Lansing’s resume are stints as president and CEO of Fingerhut Cos., which was the number 2 cataloger at the time. He managed the sale of Fingerhut to Federated Department Stores in 1999, after which he became chairman of Federated Direct, where he also oversaw Macys.com and Macy’s by Mail.
After Fingerhut, Lansing became CEO of NBC Internet, where he led a strategic repositioning of the company. Before Fingerhut, Lansing was vice president of business development at General Electric. Before GE, Lansing was chief operating officer of Prodigy Inc., where he oversaw the launch of Prodigy Internet.
He joins ValueVision from his current role as a partner at General Atlantic Partners, a global private equity firm.
Lansing is taking over the CEO responsibilities from Gene McCaffrey, former chairman and CEO who is leaving the company. Non-executive chairman duties will be taken over by Marshall S. Geller, who has been a director of ValueVision since May 1993 and was vice chairman from August 1994 to July 1999.
