Office Depot boosts web-based sales to businesses

E-commerce sales in Office Depot’s Business Services Group grew 16% in the second quarter vs. last year’s Q2 and 18% in the first half vs. last year’s first half. Total sales in Business Services increased 1% in Q2 and 2% in the first half.

 

E-commerce sales in Office Depot Inc.’s Business Services Group grew 16% in the second quarter vs. last year’s second quarter and 18% in the first half vs. last year’s first half, the company reported today. Total sales in the Business Services increased 1% in Q2 from a year ago, reaching $967.6 million and 2% for the first half to $1.99 billion. Business Services sales include contract sales and catalog sales.

Total company sales for the second quarter were $2.8 billion, up 7% from the second quarter of 2002. For the first six months, sales grew by 4% compared to the first half of 2002. Excluding the company`s newly acquired Guilbert operations in Europe, total sales grew by 3% for the second quarter and 2% for the first six months.

Worldwide comparable store sales were down 1% in the second quarter. In North America, comparable store sales were down 2.9% for the quarter vs. down 6.9% a year ago. Comp store sales were positive in June, however, the first time comparable store sales have been positive in over three years, the company says.

Operating profit for the second quarter decreased by 11% to $82 million compared to the same period in 2002. Operating profit for the first six months declined 5% to $243 million, compared to the same period in 2002.
