Leading Fuel Distributor and Retailer Trusts Business-Critical Systems to BEA; Future Plans Include New BEA WebLogic Portal Infrastructure

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Oct. 28, 2002 - BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world`s leading application infrastructure software company, today announced that Flying J, Inc., a leader in North American highway and hospitality services, has built a series of strategic applications for customer relationship management (CRM), inventory and distribution management, and retail and wholesale pricing on the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform™. In addition, Flying J plans to begin building a comprehensive portal infrastructure on BEA WebLogic Portal™ by the end of the year.

Flying J is a leader in petroleum exploration, production, refining, distribution, and retail marketing with annual revenues exceeding $4 billion. The company has more than 10,000 employees and 158 retail facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Flying J currently has three business-critical applications running on BEA WebLogic Server™. The first is a CRM system that generates data for direct-marketing campaigns, supports the company`s call-center operation, and manages more than one million customer accounts in Flying J`s loyalty programs. The second application is the liquid product movement (LPM) system, which tracks gasoline and diesel inventories, schedules deliveries, identifies most favorable supply options, and sets pricing on a station-by-station basis. The third application is a price book that establishes product pricing for all items in Flying J convenience stores and travel plazas.

"BEA has earned our trust by providing the flexibility, openness and reliability we require for our mission-critical applications," said Bron McCall, Flying J`s chief information officer. "The systems we`ve built on BEA WebLogic are at the core of our day-to-day operations. Not only do they run flawlessly on BEA WebLogic, we`ve been able to integrate them in very important ways. For example, all three applications are linked to our point-of-sale system for real-time management of product inventory and loyalty programs. We`ve also been able to link electronically to our biggest suppliers so that ordering and invoicing can be handled online."

In the final quarter of 2002, Flying J will begin extending its BEA WebLogic environment as it initiates work on an enterprise portal architecture powered by BEA WebLogic Portal. In the project`s first phase, the three applications already in production will be migrated to the portal and made accessible to employees via single sign-on. Subsequent phases will bring all Flying J business processes and applications into the portal and enable the company to deepen its integration with business partners.

"Our goal is to erase the lines separating applications so that employees can do everything they need to do in a unified, simplified work environment," said McCall. "BEA WebLogic Portal out-of-the-box WebFlow capabilities will really help in that regard and will also make our developers much more productive by allowing them to focus on building features and functionality without having to worry about navigation. We have also leveraged BEA Professional Services which has been a big help, providing us with training and a jump start on product installation and configuration."
